A Lucky Find…
I love going to thrift stores and garage sales to find unusual instruments to use in my music. Those instruments often become the secret ingredient that gives my music its personality and character.
During a visit to the local thrift store, I came across this Schoenhut tiny baby grand piano. I happily paid the $5.49 for it and brought it home to sample.
Each of the Baby Baby Grand Instrument Racks has 16 Macro Controls and 5 Macro Preset Variations.
Small Toy Full of Magical Sounds
I sampled a few notes on the piano, which sounded cool, but anytime you play a note on the piano all of the other notes resonate. So I wound up taking the piano apart so I could dampen the other notes and get some additional samples that were a little clearer.
Once I dropped those samples into Ableton Live’s Sampler, I was immediately blown away by how beautiful they sounded.
After creating a really cool Audio Effect Rack (Sparkling Twinkles FX), I started crafting the Instrument Racks.
I was able to build presets reminiscent of vibraphones, xylophones, organs, and bells, as well as some lush pads, rhythmic pads, trippy reversed sounds, and more.
Sparkling Twinkles FX adds Shimmering Delays, Lush Chorus, Tremolo, Filtering, and Reverb to Baby Baby Grand instruments. It can be used on any sound in any of your projects.
New Sounds from an Old Toy
I love how such a simple toy can become such complex and beautiful sounds. We all have the same powerful presets and virtual instruments. But taking the time to build something like this is special. There’s a clear feeling it creates that’s hard to quantify, yet I believe it’s the type of thing that can give a song that magical element. These considerations and efforts are what separate certain music from the vast sea of releases.
