Journey’s 1983 hit “Separate Ways” is a synth heavy track featuring the coveted Roland Jupiter 8, played by Jonathan Cain.

I received an email from Ken, who was looking for the sound so he can record a quarantine cover of “Separate Ways” with his reunited band, EZ Target. I decided to try to recreate it using Ableton Live’s Analog synth. I think the results are pretty good. You can compare the two sounds below, beginning with the original, followed by my recreation.

I used some of Ableton’s built-in effects to bring the sound closer to the original. For those, there are Macro Controls that will change the sound up quite a bit.

Even if you don’t intend on starting a Journey tribute band, you can use this cool vintage synth sound for your own projects!
